Avarice of Nuclear Ornithology
Avarice of Nuclear Ornithology
Yuuma puts Utsuho through a series of trials to determine her suitability for the Gouyoku Alliance. Made for Touhou Pride Game Jam 5.
Gameplay
The gameplay is turn-based strategy with a touch of puzzle, taking inspiration from Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It should (hopefully!) be possible to figure things out by playing, but here's a detailed description of mechanics:
- IMPORTANT (This is a common point of confusion): The number at the bottom of a unit is its stack size, i.e. how many of that unit are in its stack. It is not its health. Example: a stack with 10 units, with 1-4 damage, and 15 max health:
- It will deal 10-40 damage on attack (before Attack/Defense modifiers).
- If it takes 50 damage, it will lose 3 units and go down to a size of 7, with 10 "current" health remaining. It can now deal 7-28 damage.
- It will deal 10-40 damage on attack (before Attack/Defense modifiers).
- Each round, each stack of units takes one action. Units with higher initiative move first. Actions include:
- Move: a unit can move a number of tiles equal to its speed.
- Attack: a unit can attack adjacent units, or any unit it can move adjacent to. (See note below about ranged units).
- Wait: a unit can delay its action to the end of the turn. If multiple units are waiting, the waiting unit with lower initiative will be forced to move first.
- Defend: a unit skips its turn, gaining 6 Defense until its next action.
- Flying units can move over obstacles.
- Ranged units can attack anything on the map without moving, as long as no enemies are adjacent to it. Otherwise it acts as a melee unit with a 50% damage penalty.
- Attack and Defense modify damage by a percentage.
- Contrary to rumors and appearances, the wolves encountered in this game are not, in fact, Momiji.
Controls
Controls are also listed in the game, in the main menu.
- Move/Attack: LMB
- Wait: W or Space
- Defend: D
- Menu: Escape or Backspace (Use backspace in the web build)
- Advance Conversation: LMB
- Skip Conversation: Escape or Backspace
Controllers are not fully supported: I was unable to get the pointer working properly with a controller without breaking everything else. If you have a workaround to control the cursor with your controller, then the remaining controls have controller support: (A) to move/attack, (X) to wait, (Y) to defend, (Start/Options/Menu) to skip conversations or bring up the menu.
Assets
Music, art, all programming and a few of the SFX were done by me.
Most sound effects are taken from GameDevMarket audio packs from the 2018 Humble RPG Game Dev bundle, specifically the Medieval Fantasy and Pro Sound Collection v1.3 packs.
